Female hair restoration options can get you back to feeling like your former self. About 40% of women will need hair renewal treatments by their 50th birthday. While hair loss due to age is mostly seen as a male issue, it affects almost half of the female population. How a woman’s hair looks is an important part of her tastes, styles, and aesthetic profile.
Hair loss can be catastrophic to a woman’s body image and confidence, plus data shows women who suffer hair loss are more prone to mental health disorders like anxiety and depression. Close to 30 million women in the U.S. will experience some form of female pattern baldness or situational hair loss caused by factors like poor diet, medications, health conditions, or habits like smoking.
Female hair restoration options to choose from at our medical spa
Losing up to a hundred hairs daily is perfectly normal and does not cause any noticeable hair thinning because new hair grows to replace every strand lost. Hair loss develops when this natural hair growth and shedding cycle is interrupted.
Androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as female pattern hair loss, is the most common type of hair loss that affects women. It typically develops slowly over time and is caused by factors like age, genetics, and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) -- the male hormone that prevents hair follicles from getting the nutrients they need. Women with low levels of DHT can still lose hair since lower levels of other hormones like estrogen can alter the balance between male and female hormones, allowing DHT to cause hair loss.
The second most common type of hair loss that affects women is called telogen effluvium, and it can lead to symptoms like abrupt balding. It can be caused by various events, from childbirth to menopause. Some of the female hair restoration options that can be used to help you restore your style, confidence, and preferred aesthetics include:
1. Vitamin supplements
Some types of hair loss can be treated by providing a patient with all the vitamins they need to reduce hair loss, optimize growth, and promote healthy hair development. Less invasive treatments like vitamin supplements are often explored before other, more extensive treatments are considered.
2. Minoxidil
A med spa might also recommend minoxidil treatments for women dealing with hair loss. Studies show the solution can be effective at helping women with thinning hair. Minoxidil is a vasodilator, and it is not yet clear how it promotes hair loss.
Minoxidil typically comes in the form of a solution or foam. The product is applied to balding areas and should be allowed to dry before other hair products are used. Patients are typically advised to apply Minoxidil twice a day. Minoxidil takes up to four months to produce noticeable benefits, and the medication must be used regularly to maintain hair growth.
3. Laser therapy
Many med spas provide laser treatments that can be used to restore a woman’s hair growth. These treatments are effective on patients with alopecia when performed at least twice a week. Lasers promote hair growth by increasing blood circulation and removing waste products in hair follicles.
Laser therapy helps to stop hair loss and promotes the regrowth of new hairs. Side effects are rare with this approach, and it also helps to thicken existing hair.
4. Corticosteroid injections
Corticosteroid injections can be used to treat hair loss caused by various reasons like discoid lupus, lichen planopilaris, and alopecia areata. Hair loss is sometimes caused by a person’s immune system attacking natural body processes. Corticosteroids mimic cortisol, the hormone produced by the adrenal glands, and help to prevent the immune system from interfering with processes like hair growth.
Going this route typically involves receiving multiple injections in different areas to stimulate hair growth. Results can be visible in as little as four weeks. Topical corticosteroids can also be used for female hair restoration, but they typically are not as effective as injections.
5. Platelet-rich plasma therapy
PRP therapy is one of the female hair restoration options for women with hair loss. Treatments involve drawing the patient’s blood, putting it in a centrifuge, and separating the red blood cells from the plasma. Plasma is rich in growth factors, and it can be injected into balding areas to promote hair growth.
PRP treatments can be completed in as little as ten minutes and involve minimal discomfort caused by balding areas being injected with plasma. Some patients experience hair loss right after getting PRP therapy, followed by hair growth and increased thickness of existing hair. Female hair restoration with PRP therapy typically involves getting multiple injections a few weeks apart and maintenance treatments every six months.
