PRP treatment, which stands for platelet-rich plasma, aims to restore thinning or lost hair. Understanding this treatment can help you prepare for it. If you want to know more about PRP treatment, continue reading.

An overview of PRP treatment

PRP therapy is a natural treatment option for skin and hair. A person with hair loss can have this therapy in three steps. The hair doctor will draw the patient’s blood, process it, and then inject it into the patient’s scalp.

This treatment is believed to trigger hair growth. It can maintain hair growth by enhancing the blood supply to the hair follicles. Healthier and stronger follicles become thicker over time. The hair doctor may combine PRP treatment with other hair loss medications or procedures.

Collecting and injecting PRP

The PRP treatment starts with a blood draw from the patient’s arm. The hair doctor will place the blood sample in a centrifuge, which will isolate the different blood components. The plasma is the top layer. The PRP occupies the bottom part of the plasma layer. A second spin may be needed to add more platelets to the plasma.

Once the patient’s PRP is ready, the doctor will inject it onto several areas of the scalp. The treatment often takes three sessions at one-month intervals. Maintenance follows every three to six months. The hair doctor will explain this more during the consultation.

The injection process

Even though PRP treatment is not as painful as a spinal injection, it may still cause some discomfort. The hair doctor will provide an option to numb the scalp a little. This is often achieved with the application of a jelly-like cream on the injection sites. Getting this type of cream means that the patient cannot wash the hair or scalp a few days after the PRP injections. The scalp will likely look greasy upon the application of the numbing cream.

Some patients experience pressure on the scalp. Numbing helps weaken the pricking sensations, but consecutive ones provide pressure on the scalp that may become too overwhelming. Hair doctors recommend having a stuffed toy or stress ball to squeeze during treatment sessions, as these objects can help the patient deal with the discomfort of the PRP treatment. The patient must avoid exercise or wearing hats after the treatment.

The results

A patient should generally have a PRP treatment once a month for about three to four months. The hair doctor may ask the patient to come back every three to six months for maintenance treatments. The results of this treatment differ from patient to patient. Some patients will notice a few hair strands falling out and more hair growth. This often happens during the first batch of injections.

Many hair doctors have seen emotional and physical transformations with a PRP treatment for hair loss. Patients start to have a better self-image. They start to have renewed energy and enthusiasm in many activities. Hair retention, volume, and growth improve during the first three months of this therapy.

PRP treatment does not give permanent results. Patients can enjoy the effects of this therapy for a year on average. After 10 months to a year, the hair strands start to fall again. The patient will need to restart the treatment right away. The patient may notice the results appearing much more quickly after this re-treatment.

Knowing the patient’s stress levels, family history, hair products, and diet can affect the outcomes of PRP treatment. These factors can prevent the treatment from working. The hair doctor can order a blood panel to check the hormone levels of the patient. If there is an imbalance with the hormones, treatment is necessary. Correcting the hormonal levels may lead to a more effective hair loss therapy.

Possible side effects

Injecting the patient’s own blood into the patient’s scalp prevents the risk of rejection. Even so, the patient should still be aware of possible side effects. Scar tissue will possibly form after every session. There could also be a possible injury to nerves and blood vessels. Calcification and infection at the injection points are possible. The patient could also have a negative reaction to the local anesthetic during PRP treatment.

Ready to get your hair back?

Hair loss is a common problem among many men and women. This type of problem can affect your self-image in a negative way. If you feel like you need more than hair growth shampoos or conditioners, talking to a hair doctor may help. A PRP treatment may bring back the thick locks you had before.
