What Is Vaginal Rejuvenation?
It is not uncommon for women to be self-conscious about their bodies, especially when it comes to the more sensitive areas, and vaginal rejuvenation is one method of improving the function of the vaginal area, especially after childbirth. However, even women who have never had children can benefit from vaginal rejuvenation to align their bodies with the vision that they have for themselves.
Understanding vaginal rejuvenation
Vaginal rejuvenation is an umbrella term encompassing a wide range of potential procedures, each targeting different areas of the female pelvic region and its various functions. The options include the following.
Monsplasty
Those who are self-conscious about the amount of fat on their mons, or the area around the pubic bone above the labia, can have a monsplasty. This removes part of the excess fat in the region to create a slimmer silhouette.
Labiaplasty
Patients unsatisfied with the length or shape of the labia surrounding the vagina can undergo labiaplasty to reshape this tissue. This process may include removing excess or eliminating skin tags attached to the labia.
Hood reduction
Some people experience reduced clitoral sensitivity due to a large clitoral hood, which blocks stimulation. Hood reduction can remove part of the excess tissue so the clitoris is more easily accessible.
Vaginoplasty
The central procedure in many vaginal rejuvenation procedures, a vaginoplasty can repair the tissue both in and at the entrance to the vagina if a trauma like childbirth damaged it. It can also tighten the vagina.
Why get vaginal rejuvenation?
There are many reasons that a person might pursue vaginal rejuvenation. The most common drivers behind vaginal rejuvenation procedures include the following.
- Looseness of the vagina, which may occur after childbirth or during menopause as estrogen levels decline
- Lubrication issues, which can arise due to hormonal changes or physical challenges associated with the anatomy of the vaginal area
- Lack of sensitivity, which may be due to abnormalities like excessive tissue in the clitoral hood
- Incontinence, which often arises after childbirth due to vaginal stretching
- Uncomfortable sex, which may occur due to either too tight or too loose vaginal tissue
These are just a few of the many reasons that a person may pursue vaginal rejuvenation. Each person’s anatomy is different, so the process is unique to each patient.
How the process works
Vaginal rejuvenation looks different depending on which procedure is suitable for the patient. In general, the professional performing the procedure will provide topical pain relief where applicable or more comprehensive numbness and sedation. Often, the patient is asleep unless the procedure is quite minor.
Once the patient is asleep, the surgeon makes any necessary incisions to remove and reposition tissue. The procedure usually involves enough tissue change to warrant stitches, which the professional will install before waking the patient. Some stitches can dissolve on their own, while others will need to be removed in the office.
Does vaginal rejuvenation hurt?
Since the patient is asleep for most vaginal rejuvenation procedures, they do not experience pain during the process. However, they may find that they experience discomfort after vaginal rejuvenation and should take adequate time to rest.
Vaginal rejuvenation often requires that a patient minimize strenuous activity for a few days after the procedure. Depending on the complexity of the process, they may need to wait anywhere from five days to multiple weeks before they are safe to resume sexual activities. This enables the site to heal and become strong before being challenged with stretching or stimulation.
What is recovery like afterward?
Most people go home right away after their vaginal rejuvenation procedure is complete. It is best to spend the rest of that first day lying in bed to avoid putting pressure on the area by sitting. An ice pack can help to reduce swelling and discomfort. Be sure to take any recommended or prescribed pain medication on schedule, as pain is more easily managed before it begins rather than afterward.
After the first few days, check to see if any bleeding remains, and if so, speak with the medical team. Patients should avoid inserting anything into the vagina, even tampons, until healing is complete.
