Understanding the aging process
As people age, their bodies face a variety of stressors that can lead to changes in their skin and other organs. These changes can be as varied as wrinkles and fine lines, dark spots or uneven pigmentation, sagging skin, drooping breasts, or belly fat accumulation. In some cases, the signs of aging will become more apparent than others, depending on the individual's genetic makeup or lifestyle choices.
Understanding the aging process means people must understand the factors that contribute to how quickly the process takes place. Genetics, sun exposure, and hormonal changes are the most common factors.
Genetics
The cellular and metabolic systems are common contributors to why signs of aging appear. Cells can duplicate themselves up to 50 times before entering a replication failure process. When this happens, the cells lose their functional characteristics, resulting in signs of aging that the naked eye can see. The cells turn food into energy, producing byproducts in our metabolic system. While this process is necessary, it can also be harmful by causing progressive damage to cells. This process is known as metabolic aging.
Sun exposure
Sun exposure has been identified as a major contributor to causing wrinkles due to the ultraviolet radiation exposure over time causing excessive free radical damage to cells within the dermis (top) layer of skin tissue. In turn, this results in visible signs such as blotchy pigmentation patterns such as freckles.
Body areas such as facial cheeks are not always well protected against harmful UVB rays. Therefore, they tend to show wear quickly if exposed regularly over time. Wear typically shows up when individuals reach middle-age. These changes may seem to appear rapidly, but in reality, the damages have slowly been making their way to the surface. Of course, it varies depending on factors like race, ethnicity, background, etc.
Hormonal changes
Hormonal imbalances due to birth control pills or other prescription medications may cause premature cell death, contributing to aging. For example, women who are on birth control and have been using it since the age of 12-13 years old are likely to show signs of aging faster than those who do not use contraceptives.
The difference in aging between men and women
Unfortunately, age is not kind to any gender. Many people are unaware that aging causes different changes in men and women.
Men
Wrinkles are a large part of why we men appear to age quicker since they tend to develop more of them than women do. Wrinkles in men commonly form around their eyes, forehead, and mouth. Men also tend to develop more fat deposits on their faces, sagging skin on the neck area, and develop jowls (cheek sagging) early on.
Women
Women tend to develop loose skin around their neck (a condition called "turkey neck") as well as fat deposits in their lower face that cause sagging under the chin; this is commonly referred to as smoker lines or marionette lines. Women may also experience jowls around the neck, though later in life than men.
Anti-aging treatment options
While there is no way to prevent the aging process entirely, there are ways to prolong youthful beauty. This is especially a relief considering people naturally start aging in their twenties. We offer dermal fillers and injectables as effective methods to help eliminate current signs of aging.
Dermal fillers
Dermal fillers are injectable fillers that can restore volume to the areas of the face that have deteriorated. The most common types of fillers are Restylane, Radiesse, and Juvederm.
- Restylane® is a purified form of hyaluronic acid and will smooth smile and marionette lines
- Radiesse® uses calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres (CaHA) suspended in a gel and is used to smooth moderate to severe folds (nasolabial folds)
- Juvederm® is a hyaluronic acid gel that penetrates deeper layers of skin and hard-to-reach areas such as the chin
Injectables
Aesthetic injectable treatments such as FDA-approved Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport are neurotoxins that are great alternatives to surgery as they are less invasive but still address the same issues. Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport are injected into specific muscles around the face to help them relax or minimize their activity. Some common concerns injectables address are loss of volume or firmness, deep wrinkles (crow's feet, laugh lines), and skin discoloration (sun spots, freckles).
The results for each injectable last around the same time (around six months). The results of injecting these three products into the same areas can differ slightly since they work differently in each individual's body chemistry.
How determine an effective anti-aging treatment option
While it is nice to have multiple options, not every treatment option will be effective for a patient. To determine an effective treatment plan for the patient, we first require an initial consultation with Dr. Pasha. During this time, we will review the patient's medical history, allergies, lifestyle (smoke and alcohol intake, skin care treatments, etc.), and examine the areas of concern.
Once we complete this in-depth consultation, we will be able to draft a customized treatment plan. We will then perform any anti-aging treatment options in-office under the direction of Dr. Pasha. In some cases, patients can continue the treatment process at home with various medications, products, and more.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I use an anti-aging skin care product. Will this impact my treatment?
A. It can be hard to say without knowing the name of the actual product. During your consultation, we will review every product you currently use and how long you have used them. From there, Dr. Pasha will offer professional medical advice on the best practices for the products before and after receiving your treatment option.
Q. What is the difference between dermal fillers and injectables?
A. Both procedures involve injecting solutions into your skin. However, it is the components that are being injected that are different, as well as which problems they target. Dermal fillers include Restylane® Juvederm® and Radiesse®. Their most common treatment areas are lips, butt lift, chin and jawline, cheeks, hands, and facial folds. Injectables include the neurotoxins Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport. Their primary purpose is to relax muscles in the body to reduce their activity.
Q. Are results permanent?
A. No. The results are temporary for dermal fillers and injectables and require multiple sessions. Most results have an average of six months before you need another session. However, this is a case-to-case basis as every person's body chemistry differs.
Q. Should I get surgery instead?
A. Surgeries are for more permanent results. The above anti-aging treatment options are considered a safe and effective alternative to traditional surgeries while addressing the same concerns. They also have the added benefit of no downtime and little to no pain during the recovery process.
Q. How do I know which anti-aging treatment option is best for me?
A. That is why we are here. Our team is led by board-certified physician Dr. Pasha who will conduct an in-depth examination. We will review your medical history, medications (OTC and prescriptions), and an evaluation of your problem areas, and craft an effective treatment custom for you. All you need to do is schedule a consultation, and we will take it from there.
