Causes of hair loss
Often, individuals believe they are the only ones struggling with hair loss. This cannot be further from the truth. In the United States alone, an estimated 50 million men and 30 million women share the same struggle. However, common causes of hair loss in men and women differ.
Men
Androgenic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness (MPB), is one of the most common causes of hair loss.. If a patient received this diagnosis, they have a genetic sensitivity to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This sensitivity means the hair follicles will shrink, resulting in a shortened lifespan. MPB most commonly shows up through a receding hairline or the thinning of the top of the patient's head, known as the crown.
Of course, there can be many other reasons for men's hair loss, such as genetics, medical conditions, and aging.
Women
A common cause of hair loss in women is a hormonal imbalance or changes after menopause or pregnancy. In addition, stress may play a role in triggering a sudden onset of female pattern baldness (FPB), especially among young women who are very sensitive to it. Also, if they have an additional underlying medical issue such as anemia or thyroid problems, that could also contribute.
What is a NeoGraft procedure?
Neograft is an advanced hair restoration procedure that has been clinically proven effective in treating all types of hair loss. It is the only FDA-approved hair restoration procedure and the only treatment that uses autologous (the patient's own) cells.
The purpose of the NeoGraft is to stimulate hair growth, and patients can expect to have the same number of hairs on their heads before the procedure. The only difference is that they will be placed in different locations, allowing them to blend into their existing hairline.
Who is an ideal candidate
While we strive to provide as many people with hair growth treatments, note that this particular procedure is not for everyone. To determine if the patient is an ideal candidate, we must first confirm the patient possesses:
- Age. 18 years or older
- Possess a healthy scalp and skin elasticity. To main the grafts’ appearance over time
- Medical history. Must be free of certain diseases, such as skin cancer
The patient's medical history can be a deal breaker in whether or not they are eligible for the NeoGraft hair growth treatment. Several diseases can prevent us from safely moving forward with this procedure–specifically cancers such as melanoma (skin cancer), lupus erythematosus, polymyositis/dermatomyositis (PM/DM). Additionally, chronic active hepatitis/cirrhosis of the liver/hepatic dysfunction related to alcohol abuse; autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroidism–wherein one's immune system attacks the thyroid gland resulting in hyperthyroidism.
The patient does not need to know if they qualify for the procedure before their appointment. That is what our team is here for, and Dr. Parsha is fully capable of performing an examination and diagnosing before proceeding with this hair growth treatment option.
What to expect during the NeoGraft procedure
The doctor will perform the minimally-invasive hair growth procedure in-office. Before the procedure begins, we will give the patient a dose of local anesthesia so that they remain conscious but relaxed throughout the process.
Dr. Pasha will begin the procedure by making tiny incisions in the patient's scalp and removing small sections of hair follicles called donor sites (hair in the back of the scalp) and applying them to areas where new hair is desired (the recipient areas). Once complete, the patient is free to go home to begin the healing process.
The process takes approximately one hour to complete and may result in a small scar on the patient's scalp where the new hair growth occurs.
What to expect after the procedure
Patients need to understand what to expect within the next few days, weeks, and months following the hair transplant regarding how their hair will grow. After the procedure, patients may experience mild swelling, tenderness, and scabbing at the transplant sites. We may prescribe a pain medication to alleviate discomfort while healing.
Hair growth begins within the first two months. The initial growth phase lasts until 8-10 months when new hair has reached its maximum length of 5cm to 2 inches. After the first phase, new follicles continue to grow slower than before. Patients can expect to see approximately 3cm to 1 inch per year, depending on their age, genetics, and overall health status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Are the results permanent?
A. Yes. Once the transplanted follicles are settled, your natural hair will begin to grow. As long as your follicles receive the needed oxygen and blood circulation, you will experience lasting results.
Q. Will people be able to tell the difference between my hair and procedure site?
A. No. It will be your natural hair growing out of your scalp. There may be a small scar where we need to make an incision during the procedure, but usually, the hair covers it.
Q. Is the NeoGraft procedure painful?
A. We will place you under a local anesthetic to minimize any pain or discomfort you may experience during the procedure. We want to keep you awake but in a relaxed state the whole time. After the procedure, you may experience tenderness and discomfort at the procedure site. If necessary, we may prescribe a pain prescription.
Q. Will I need to wear a bandage or any headgear after the procedure?
A. No. The NeoGraft is a minimally invasive procedure, with minimal bleeding associated with the process. In the days following the procedure, you may experience scabbing, but do not pick at it; allow the healing process to take its course.
Q. When will I begin to see my hair grow?
A. It will take some time after the procedure to witness results. Hair growth will begin approximately two-four months after the initial procedure. The hair will then grow rapidly up to 10 months after the procedure. Eventually, it will grow at the same pace as the hair follicles that did not receive a transplant.
