What are spider veins?
Spider veins are small, red, or blue veins that appear on the skin's surface. They usually occur in clusters on the legs but can also appear in other body areas, such as the arms and face. Patients may also notice spider veins in conjunction with varicose veins. Spider veins and varicose veins are different conditions. Spider veins tend to be smaller than varicose veins, which are larger and more noticeable beneath the skin's surface.
While the condition can be genetic, spider veins are most commonly found in individuals who are pregnant, overweight, and in those who sit or stand for long periods.
What is Laser Vein Therapy?
Laser vein therapy is a non-invasive procedure using the latest technology to destroy spider veins safely. It is a quick, painless, and effective procedure that delivers long-lasting results. The procedure can take as little as 15 minutes for smaller spider veins or as much as an hour for larger veins. Generally, patients only need one appointment to see effective results.
The procedure works by directing light energy into the spider vein so that it can be absorbed by the blood cells inside it. Once absorbed, this energy will cause damage to those cells while leaving the surrounding cells and tissue with minimal damage. As the damaged cells die off or become damaged beyond repair, they will no longer be able to carry oxygen efficiently through the patient's body; leading to the death of the unsightly veins.
Ideal candidates for Laser Vein Therapy
Laser therapy is designed for anyone who has spider veins. Though the procedure is safe, determining whether or not a patient makes an ideal candidate is extremely important. There are various factors that we will use to determine if the patient is ideal or not, including the severity of the condition, medical history, and age.
If a patient is experiencing a medical condition that makes them high-risk for procedures on their legs, such as diabetes, they may not be approved for the procedure. Additionally, we will need to take a closer look at patients over the age of 60 or pregnant, as many other factors can apply during the vetting process. Furthermore, we will need to review if the patient has had complications during previous surgeries to determine the likelihood of the success rate of the laser therapy procedure.
How to prepare for the procedure
After determining the patient is an ideal candidate, we will set the appointment to give the patient enough time to follow a few rules before the procedure to ensure effective results. We may recommend the patient:
- Avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, and other blood thinners for at least 48 hours
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours to prevent excessive bleeding
- Avoid caffeine for 24 hours to decrease the risk of bruising
- Avoid smoking or nicotine in general for 24 hours to decrease the risk of slow healing and infection
What to expect after the procedure
We understand that the thought of using a laser on a patient's skin can cause some anxiety, which is why we employ a local anesthetic to keep them relaxed during the entire process. By doing this, there is no need for the patient to stay in our center overnight, and unless they are having complications, they may return home and continue with their normal activities the same day.
Patients can expect temporary side effects from the procedure. Following the procedure, we will go over effective methods the patient can use to mitigate symptoms at home. However, it is good to note that since every patient is different, their recovery process will look different also. Common side effects include:
- Bruising, swelling, and redness at the treatment site
- Numbness
- Discomfort-related symptoms
- Itching at the treatment site
- Discoloration/hyperpigmentation
If the patient experiences any of the above symptoms, the best way to reduce them is by keeping as much pressure on the sites as possible. The symptoms typically disappear within a week. If the symptoms have not disappeared after a week, give our office a call so that we may advise. Of course, if there is an emergency, such as excessive bleeding or pain (which is rare), seek emergency care immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Is the procedure painful?
A. No. We will place you under a local anesthetic to alleviate any discomfort-related symptoms. There is also no pain associated with your recovery.
Q. How much downtime will I need afterward?
A. There is little to no downtime associated with this procedure. Most patients can return home and resume their normal activities the same day. However, if you are experiencing numbness, tingling, or discoloration after the procedure, we recommend limiting the amount of pressure until the symptoms alleviate. These side effects normally disappear within a week or two.
Q. How long is the treatment process?
A. Treatment time depends on the severity of your condition and the area of the body we are treating. For example, someone with small spider veins on their thigh will finish quicker than a patient with varicose and spider veins on both legs. The procedure can generally take fifteen minutes to an hour to complete.
Q. Will I need medication after the procedure?
A. We will not need to prescribe medications after the procedure. During the initial consultation, Dr. Pasha will determine if you are a good candidate for laser vein therapy. At this time, we will review medications you are currently taking, over-the-counter, and prescriptions. If you are taking blood thinners such as aspirin or ibuprofen, we will advise you to stop taking them (if safe) for 48 hours before the procedure.
Q. Is the procedure better for men or women?
A. Laser vein therapy is for anyone struggling with spider or vascular veins. Gender is not a factor. However, if the patient is pregnant, over the age of 60, or is diagnosed with a medical condition such as diabetes, then Dr. Pasha may advise alternative treatment options.
